What is Cool?
We are swamped down and bogged up with definitions of cool. Im walking to work today with my tattered gym bag on my shoulders right? and im thinking i need a new bag cos the one i have right now is ripped so much that the only thing holding it together is probably the dirt.
I was thinking of spending for an okayish Field bag, about 1.5k. A bit hardier than the regular stuff at Emperor (MC) so kind of worth the money. Then the back of my mind pipes up with the crazy notion of shelling out for an Adidas or a Nike instead. Subtle, black, 4k and as cool as a guy of my social standing can afford to get without pawning his left testicle. I dismissed the notion. After all, it's no point getting a bag like that and then going to just a regular gym right. People are gonna think you bought it off the World Market anyway.
But I am not averse to such extravagant purchases. There are some things that I feel the tendency to splash on. Shoes, some clothes maybe. Yes i am pretentious and part of the
But Hwhy?
Reading through my last paragraph, my eye fell on this definitive statement; "People are gonna think you bought it off the world market anyway"
People are gonna think.
Hmmm.
I mean would I want that bag if every Somey, Siri and Ratnapala at the gym had a svelte Adidas of their own? Or would I wanna go even higher up the market in search of commercial offerings in the sports bag market that probably exist but which i am not aware of like maybe Versace Sport? I am just postulating here. But I think Nike will cut it anywhere, I’ve always had a preference for Adidas though.
But coolness does not only relate to 'stuff'. it relates very heavily also to attitudes, who we hang out with and where we live. But location of residence doesn't matter that much when you're young. It’s your school that matters when you’re young.
You're safe in the cool-o-meter if you went to a 'leading school in Colombo' or an 'International School'. You're coated in a mysterious aura, which is also uber-cool, if you've 'studied abroad' as well. If you're doing you're higher studies, it’s always cool to say that you're 'down for the summer' or 'taking a winter vacation'. Local higher education has it's own cool-o-metrics and whatnot, differing between the different institutes and courses, but I can't properly put my finger on it cos i am myself embroiled in it, and will probably be heavily biased to my own coolness if i tried :D
Its uncool to put a nose in a smiley, a fact which I found out from Jerry’s blog. when Fallen most kindly pointed it out to him.
My last post was apparently cynical yet aloof-ishly cool, according to Makuluwo. Thank you for that by the way, I was trying really hard. You’ll find out why in the para after next.
Cool is a phenomenon of society, it’s tied to what we aspire to and want to be. It often hits hard into secret places of our consciousness, taps into things that we won't even admit to our closest friends that we like, or want. You can probably tell a lot about a man if you knew what he exactly thought was 'cool'.
It’s also cool to be cynical. It’s cool to be aloof. To hold yourself above the massess. to be different. Hell it’s even cool to be a social outcast, but not in an un-cool way of course.
Cool-ness is a universal concept. And like all universal concepts, you can’t really explain what it means until you immerse yourself in it. And this post probably didn't teach you anything about it anyway either.
Today's post brought to you by, the local (oligopolistic) supermarket industry, Gedara yamang.

Among many other things, I can't stand the outcasts of society who dress up in trenchcoats and stand away from the crowd, to look 'cool'. Also the cynical monkeys. Oh so more-jaded-than-thou and so world weary they piss coffee.
Remember Steve 'Kick of Cool' McQueen?
"So cool he'll make YOU look uncool"
That post was so cool, man. ;-)
Yeah, the nose looks weird.
:-S
you no like mah nose?
interesting post.
I like the left bit of the header..the right...not so cool wagei
Jerry - dude i wasn't born when he was the in thing, but i think Clint Eastwood was the veritable definition of cool if that helps.
ah well each to his own i guess. we all have our ways of disatancing ourselves from society don't you think?
Papare Boy - yeah lol, iv kinda stopped using it too. :) couldnt help it, internal cool-o-meter commanded it.
Dee - hah, YOUR nose is fine, just not your smiley's.
and thanks! the right side is meant to look oddly jarrring. (or maybe that's just my excuse for screwing up)
Ah interesting question!
First of all, in my book, there are the cool people, there are the wannabe cool people, and the totally uncool people.
The wannabe cool people do whatever it takes to make people THINK they're cool: be it, dressing up weirdly, acting cynical, saying and doing certain things they think are cool. It's an act to entertain people.
The bonafide cool person genuinely doesn't really care what people think and just does things he wants to do, that other people will look at and go 'omg he's cool!' much to his oblivion. The natural trendsetters.
The uncool people don't really have enough flair to do anything cool, wannabe-ishly or otherwise. Often under this category are the witless assholes and the poor saps who scrutinize the people who aren't uncool out of a sense of bitterness.
You're welcome!
;)
Woah. I had no idea half the stuff you mentioned counted as cool. =D
Your blogs cool and that's that.
And I hate Adidas. There bags are ugly.
Plus with the number of rip offs these days, brands don't really matter.
Sabby: "Plus with the number of rip offs these days, brands don't really matter."
Yeah, ever seen those oh so cool Adibas shoes? Yeah, it's spelt with a 'B'.
'Cool' was so 90's dude!!!!
Maku - what are you, doing a thesis on it or something? :P but i suppose you're right.
Sab - thanks! and well as for the brands, the trap is that the person who owns it KNOWS he's something special, and can authentically publicize the fact:) plus really, brands stand out.
Papare Boy - Adibas? lol yeah and the Nice shoes. but im sure all of us who shop at Odel know how to pick the good ones
Anon - Daimn! now the fact that i didnt know about it makes me like, totallyuncool duude!
P.s. i bought the Field bag
we alwayss findss the darrk underrgrround rreachess ssatissfyinglly cooll
Well what's cool is subjective now innit?
While jocks may find geeks uncool 'cause they are athletically challenged, geeks would consider jocks uncool for not knowing what the Data Robotics Drobo is...
What's a Data Robotics Drabo?
Thing - Hmmm.. i bet they are!
Messiahofmadness - Ah yes, the famous Data Robotics Drobo paradox.*nods head intelligently*
Papare Boy - uncool jock!
I totally agree with makuluwo!!!
I do thesises (thesi?) on everything, boyo! ;D
tash - i know, pure genius that girl i tell you!
Maku - hi! was just talking about u..and its thesi i guess yes. Miss Dr of cool
i died a little at the siri, somapala and perera bit.
Hehe nice post! Totally agree with Mak's mini-thesis (the plural of which is 'theses', btw ;-) ).
Oh and some of my smileys have noses, and others don't. As a general rule, if there's a letter, there's no nose. Does that make me cool or uncool? Or just really sad? :D
Noorie - hyok hyok, here, when r you coming back?
Pseudo - thanks! i knew there was something wrong with 'thesi'..
dude, you're trying to make a science out of being cool. which is like, totallyuncool :D
