Do not vote this 25th.
If you absolutely have to, vote for an opposition party.
Why?
Well it’s because of a few simple reasons. The government is powerful enough as it is, some may say even too powerful. They have already swept away any credible opposition and clamped down on freedom of expression. This administration has not been overally better in terms of morality or fairness than any other administration that we have had in this country since the times of JR.
The government "is itching to declare success ahead of an important regional election on April 25th" - The Economist, and we know it is true. Concrete victory in the war before the elections would doubtless ensure them a landslide victory. And this is where we have to remember what happened the last time a government in Sri Lanka won an election like that;
JRs administration had so much power that they simply swept aside any opposition and the much derided 'Executive Presidency' was initiated. This measure has had a lot of opposition over time but could not be brought down because of the fact that it was written in the constitution by a government that the public voted in with an overwhelming majority. And every single president who came into power after him has always gained office through promises to abolish this scourge on the political system but have always avoided doing so, why? Simply because it favours those in power. It allows them to virtually do whatever they wish. Imagine a man unaccountable to the law itself? And is deemed so by nothing less that the law itself? if a person with no political awareness whatsoever heard about this he would say this man would turn out to be the biggest criminal in the whole nation. And reality has shown us that it is far from untrue. Crime becomes effectively written into law, for crimes conducted by one who cannot be held accountable for them are essentially allowed. This was nothing less than a desecration of justice.
JR also abolished the prevalent system of voting. that of smaller 'seat' based voting where citizens voted in candidates who they genuinely felt would serve them in some way and did not vote in candidates who they felt did not do anything worthwhile during their time period in office. Candidates catering to a smaller demographic were thus forced to include some measure of integrity into their activities and were to an extent answerable to the public of their individual seats if they were not.
This system was expanded and people were made to vote for candidates on a district level and on a provincial level. Creating disconnect between the candidates and contestants and leaving their voting decision susceptible to campaigning and promotions rather than their actual personal knowledge of the person being elected. This also pushed out smaller, less financially able candidates due to the vast resources required for a district wide campaign effectively ensuring that only the existing members of parliament through their amassed wealth, and rich individuals with political connections could enter into the fray with a hope of winning. It created barriers for smaller more idealistically motivated candidates to enter the political arena. So not only did they make it impossible for people to vote in individuals who they thought could do some genuine work, as in people they knew more closely, they also effectively made it impossible for such people to contest in the first place, ensuring a cycle of similar minded individuals continuously maintaining control of the political power of the country.
The impacts of JRs administration were vast and many, and not long after he came into power, the country was plunged into chaos and a quarter century of devastating violence befell us.
Now, i understand that people will be grateful to Mahida's government if he wins the war, regardless of the humanitarian atrocities that it enacted during its course. But the same gratefulness and overwhelming support that was extended to JR, if it is extended to Mahinda as well, would end up being abused and used for more consolidation of undemocratic power, more restrictions of the freedoms that we still enjoy.
If you are a blind eyed freak who thinks that the current government is the best thing since heaven, i would not be able to reason with you, because you are disillusioned, and hypnotized. But if you are a rational individual capable of looking at events objectively please, i beg of you think of the balance of power. Don’t let your emotions get the better of you. Make sure that even if you want the government to have a majority, do not let them have too much of a majority because power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts more than anything else.
IF you want them to take power let them, current public sentiment may well achieve that. But take no part of it yourself, or you will be blamed for God knows what comes our way afterwards. Voting is power, you are effectively handing it over, thinking of your own preference is not enough, and you need to understand the macro picture. So if you want to vote, vote, but vote for the opposition at least. And ensure that those who are in power do not get too drunk with it.

don't think not voting is a good way to go about ensuring a balance of power. it will only leave the way open for those non-votes to be manipulated by the government parties into votes. so if anything turn up at the polling booths and cancel out your vote. but that isn't really goin to ensure a balance of power either...so if we want to have some form of balance i guess it would be to VOTE for an opposition party. but ofcourse on a provincial council level, havin one PC that consists of opposition ministers ...don't know what a big difference it will make on a national level but i guess it's something. but it's the most important PC since the administration capital is also under it so might make a huge difference as well. anyways yea i'm voting and it's goin for the UNP. three preferential votes... shiral, sujeewa senasinghe and i havn't decided on no.3.
dammit! stupid blogger just ate my comment!
what i said pretty much goes along the same lines as who else but me's. i'd rather use my vote to do what i want with it than let some goon hired by the government use it to get their way. i could be wrong but i'd bet something expensive that voter apathy is one reason the government gets in with such huge majorities.
You know you guys are right, for a moment i forgot how corrupt we were! this was aimed at the more wavering voter trying to decide whether to vote and in which direction. As many votes as possible need to go to the opposition because now is when we really need a strong opposition. The government has already infiltrated the UNP and have cast their disease in its veins (Karu J for e.g.) so we need to be careful. But of you DONT feel like voting for the opposition, its better of you dont vote and as WEBM says, make sure no one exploits your vote.
On voter apathy, that’s a very good point. People should take responsibility for their vote. On a different note, a credible source told me that there were more than two hundred names listed in a family for one billing address somewhere in Grandpass! Meaning more free and illegal votes.
Machang, just wanted to say you are a better politician than everyone else :-) You really know how to play it safe :-)
I used to have this discussion with my parents when I was living in SL (and not old enough to have the vote) - we decided that spoiling the vote was a more powerful statement than not using it at all.
It is a very interesting comparison you make between JR and Mahinda - both with so much promise and so much to give...but the latter was needed because the former messed up royally IMO.
Once again I don't have the vote. I hope you guys think long and hard before placing those Xs. Democracy needs intelligent voters.
NB - thanks.
Pseudo - agreed. intelligent voting is what is needed cos absolute power IMO has a chance of corrupting anyone..I just hope we don’t have another political disaster in our hands.. And if Mahinda as you say, needed to counter JR why doesn’t he overturn some of the latter's controversial decisions and try and make this country more of a democracy? THAT'll be somewhere to start to build up some credibility right?
When I said he was needed to counter JR, I was referring to the role the 83 riots played in the LTTE situation. But you're absolutely right, one way to build up some credibility would be to rectify some of the other dodgy decisions JR made. But then we go back to your statement regarding power corrupting anyone and everyone. Correct me if I'm wrong...but I'm yet to see a leader who would willingly take a hit to his/her power for the sake of the country they lead. "Country before self" is just a phrase reserved for poor soldiers.
Exactly, and that’s why we've got to be careful not to give too much power to anyone. This will increase their ability to exploit it to their advantage. By providing a balanced power structure, we are ensuring that the interests of those in power will trade off against each other.
Duuuude! first of all... ur posts r too bloody long man.. i loose interest after the 1st para.. hehehe sorry.. and im sooo gonna vote this time :D its my first time. can u believe tht shit hehe.. 23 years old and voting for the first time.. the arses dint send me the polling card b4.. its an experience man enjoy it.. hehe
Yeah, I very much agree with your points. There won't be much of a chance that the opposition (as bland as it is) will turn over the tables this election. But there is no point handing over the country and our fates to the goons in power in a golden saucer. So, people should at least vote for the opposition in the hope that they will get some sort of strength.
I think JVP has a better way of agonizing the government than the current UNP!!...Well that aside… its quite true what you say...Absolute Power Corrupts...
But come on man! its a freakin provincial council election...i would cast my War vote even if it means that the road to my home doesn’t get repaired for the next five years...i could live with that.
I would rather think of how many innocent children being able to live freely without being child soldiers than how the elected UPFA MP would take half a million rupees as bribes for the next 5 years. At least now only one would continue to exist. True what you say...i got sick of watching state tv channels glorifying Mahinda as some kind of a god...but given the nature of the election i don’t think ignoring your vote would have any impact, I know there are many extreme idealists who would blindly go and vote for the government, but i don’t give a rat’s ass abt that, for me this vote is just coming into terms with the reality that the war is actually over…
