When you are a blunt guy living in a not so blunt world, you usually find it hard to see through the smoke. Or rather, you don't see the smoke at all. Social situations disintegrate under the unsubtle slash of the knife of direct statements that need to be buttered up, baked and served in a plate with blueberry pie instead.
Romantic options dwindle as you usually don't say what is 'expected' and skip the foreplay because you just know where your gonna end up anyway. Chicks are so shallow. Reminds me of russel crowe's little spat at the bar in 'a beautiful mind'. i can relate to the way he feels. does that make me a schizophrenic genius then? i dont know about the genius, but shizophrenia is not an unfamiliar sensation. lets hope the genius turns up soon. theres gotta be some upside to a chronic inability to get laid.
Casual conversations with new acquaintances turn into hurt and uncomfortable silences as you inadvertantly say something that was dancing around in your mind. So he stuttered, and so you just came out with it and made fun of him hey you was only jooking! no need for the uncomfortable silence and for people to walk away. Would've been much better for everyone to have a guffaw and put it behind, would even have made the stutterer more comfortable with the company in question. Like saying 'okay you chaps so i stutter, have a laugh and lets move on kids'. It builds relationships to have a quiet laugh about our differences now and then. hell if you were ever a schoolboy, you'd know this.
We know these things when we are kids, we are born with the knowledge. Adulthood just takes it all away. It instils this artificial smokescreen of properness that distorts everything honest and good and encourages all sorts of intricacies built up of 'white' lies and underground guerilla communication that is a downright pain in the rectum spectrum to behold.
Kids are honest, they are direct they are blunt. there is nothing wrong with that. Oh yeah you'll look at them with a sweet smile while your eyes bore into them and you grit your teeth and think 'geez wasn't this tiny pandithaya (know-it-all) ever properly slapped by his parents?' and imagine ways of teaching the bugger a lesson while all the while knowing that the only reason you got so worked up in the first place was cus the kid was right. Thats right, the five year old just told you how it was.
As we grow up, we learn a lot. Ooh now thats impressive isnt it? but we become dumbasses and complicate the single thing that we should never have forgotten, our first lesson in life, smoke free bluntness and openness. And you know whats worse? whats worse is we come to regard the very practice of it as crass and avoid it like the plague, or the swine flu.

ah yes indeed.. well said.. the open and honest ppl are dwindling at an alarming rate..
but there is the other side to it.. there are occasions where tact, class and properness are essential.. and its in those situations that the blunt folk get ridiculed without mercy, hence the general populace avoid being blunt in ANY situation..
dnt even think abt being blunt with the ladies :D as in, it takes a level of comfort with some ppl b4 u can really throw ur opinions and stuff at them, u kno.. or maybe im just infected with the 'swine flu' (which has now become the literary equivalent of 'mad cow')... :P
"Reminds me of russel crowe's littel spat at the bar in 'a beautiful mind'."
That's the Nash Equilibrium! Brilliant theory! You'll learn about it if you're doing economics.
However, it wasn't described properly in the movie... his explaination there is flawed... I think it's cause they were trying to make the theory apply to picking up girls.
As... for the main point of the post... er... you lost me after the Nash Equilibrium... =P
Meg/M.o.m/cyanide/ THE PUPPETEER!!!
gehan - those are the instances im talking about. its precisely there that bluntness is needed IMO
Meg - yeah well i think he tried to skip the whole thing and get to the end there. He explains the whole game to her as he saw how it would unfold. But i think he later realized that for game theory to exist and his 'equilibrium' to exist the game needs to be played, cos its an observation of unfolding events of sorts. and the point my dear Puppeteer is that we should never have grown up! well in a manner of speaking at least.
I've always wondered about how when an adult says something like you smell disgusting he's slapped in the face with a handbag, but if a 5 year old says it everyone laughs and shoos him off.
It takes a lot to be blunt in a not so blunt world, and it's super if you can always speak honestly no matter what.
But I think in some situations, when total honesty isn't a compulsion, people don't want to hear the whole truth and nothing but the truth. Cuz sometimes that can be either pretty uninteresting or harsh.
Hence the baking with blueberry pie and all. ;)
I wanna stick to being Immature!!!!! =D. Always and Forever.
It takes skill to be blunt with our opinions without being blunt with our words, but I think that's what we should be aiming for. Kids are blunt with their opinions and their words...but we don't expect them to be aware of social graces. Adults try not to be blunt with their words (which I think is important) but end up thinking that the same should apply to their opinions...resulting in the advice that Gehan gave you re the ladies :-). The ones who are blunt with their opinions (and words) come across as boorish, and subsequently get ostracised.
Mak's right in saying that people don't want to hear the truth because it's harsh. But I think most of the time the hostility towards someone who's brutally honest is not because of what was said but because of how it was said.
BTW, you calling me a schizophrenic genius? I liiike :D
Being blunt is an art . If you say Im ugly then i would punch you in the face. not because i think you are wrong ( which you are ) but becuase I dont want you telling me how it is. however if im your closest buddy then yes u may say it and i will say "i know" and laugh at myself. if you are with a complete stranger why not word it differently? there's no point being righteous if you can't not upset a stranger ,. so try something like " you've got a unique style" ;) i dunno. im just blabbering. but think about it . who says blue berry pies are all that bad ??
PR hit the nail on the head with her 'Adults try not to be blunt' comment -You go girl! :)
The ONLY time it'll work with a girl is if ur platonic with her and tht too if ur super close, if not ul just get swept under the carpet!
and yes it takes a certain 'skill/art' to be blunt but not come across as a loud, pompous walrus! I have a friend who's a maestro at it!
Sometimes people forget that tact goes a long way, regardless of how 'good' u are with each other.
ladies ladies, why this weakness of yours that cannot come to terms with original human intentions? and why the need for you to be cushioned from direct thought with words and nuances of nonsense?
Society is like this because poeple are afraid of being direct cos they are themselves are afraid of direct people.
think about it, so we divise a convenient system where everybody lies and is 'nice to the face' and goes through all the rituals and complicates everything, while as a race we could be using all that effort and wasted time to accomplish so much more??
@whack
Would you say you're completely frank when telling people how it is? For example, if somebody at an open mic had a completely crap piece of writing that should never have seen the light of day, would you say that? Would you say it in those words?
What the females are trying to say(Unsuccessfully, as usual :P ) is that there's a way to be honest and blunt, but but using the proper words so it doesn't sound that harsh.
Would you prefer 'That post was a piece of crap' or 'I didn't like that post much'?
exactly. we are caught up inside it. even im not that blunt usually cos i know how people will react to it. Its a give and take thing you see. If people being spoken to bluntly were ok with it too, then the system would work, but we are irrationally consumed with the notion of semi-greatness or are sensitive to the notion that we could be perceived to be 'crap' by someone else. which indicates a lack in confidence and therefore a weakness. wouldn't you agree?
as for saying something is 'crap' as an intelligent person you can't really can you? all you can say for sure is that 'i thought it was crap' and 'for these reasons'. just dissing it as 'crap' wouldn’t be honest and therefore wouldn’t constitute bluntness.
hi sezy, i love this post.
